Wirral borough council have decided to add a 33% surcharge on cremating people who's caskets are more than 74cm wide or 2.13m long. It follows the installation of larger cremators at Landican Crematorium. A spokesman said since the installation the two machines had dealt with seven larger coffins. He added: "It is not something there is exceptional demand for." The new cremators were installed in 2012. Previously, larger coffins had to be dealt with outside the borough or families had to opt for burial instead. Cremations in Wirral are charged at different rates depending on the time of day - a charge of £560 for a ceremony between 09:00 and 09:30 rises to £634 for one between 14:30 and 15:30. The new surcharge will see those prices rise to between £744 and £843. The spokesman said the increase was "in keeping with general practice", adding that "some other authorities set the threshold for levying the charge much lower". However, he said the Wirral charge "reflects the additional time and energy it takes to process larger cremations". A CORNER shop in Wirral was shut down after health inspectors found it infested by mice. Officers found droppings on food which was on display and even chocolate bars with wrappers which had been chewed through by rodents when they visited Ambal News and Wine, in Wallasey. Shop owner Hussain Vellathamby has been told his business will not be allowed to re-open until it is thoroughly cleaned up. Wirral council health inspectors had applied for an emergency hygiene prohibition order after visiting the shop on Poulton Road on Monday, April 8. Wirral magistrates court was told they had found widespread evidence of the mouse infestation. Senior environmental health officer Jon Hardwick told the court he had examined pest control records at the shop and found Mr Vellathamby had been warned by the pest control company he employed as far back as January of the problem, one entry having “three exclamation marks”. Mr Hardwick said he had also visited the shop on the morning of the court hearing, where he still found evidence of mice and droppings. Although he acknowledged Mr Vellathamby’s claim he and his family had spent “many hours” cleaning, Mr Hardwick said: “I still believe a risk to health exists. “There were still droppings today on shelves in among products. “Rodents have been crawling among cans and drinks bottles which will be consumed direct to the mouth.” Mr Vellathamby told the court there were “still some areas remaining” to be cleaned. However, the court was also presented with a letter from a neighbour who said the problem arose from rubbish which had been left at the back of the property next door. She said rubbish had been piled “three feet deep” in the yard and was only cleared away last week by the council. Chair of the magistrates bench, Dr Christine Smith, approved the application to shut the shop and imposed the emergency hygiene prohibition order. But she said: “We strongly believe until the problem outside the property is addressed, you are fighting a losing battle. “The problem is there and it’s a hygiene problem for the whole area and your shop just seems to have copped it – but we cannot allow this to persist.” The magistrates ordered Mr Vellathamby to pay £250 towards costs. Afterwards, Cllr Brian Kenny, Wirral’s cabinet member for the environment, said it is “essential that the public has confidence in the quality of all Wirral’s food premises” and the council will give traders support “but will not hesitate to take enforcement action where circumstances warrant it, as in this case”. He added: “This business will only be allowed to re-open if we are satisfied they are no longer a health risk.” Merseytravel has apologized to motorists frustrated by troublesome toll booths at Mersey Tunnels. Several motorists have complained that since the increase in tolls at the beginning of the month, the coins were slipping through the toll mechanism causing drivers the inconvenience of retrieving them and feeding them back into the cash baskets. One driver said: “The ten-pence piece just kept rolling straight out and into the basket beneath. I tried plenty of times but it just was not having it. "It was a bit stressful as I could see drivers in the queue behind me getting impatient. But there was nothing I could do - it was the only small change I had at the time. “It appeared to me that tunnel staff were well aware of this problem and there were several attendants ready outside the booths to help drivers.” Now Merseytravel has pledged to smooth things out. A spokesman said: “We are aware of occasional delays suffered by motorists using the Mersey Tunnels over the past few days. “These have been caused by a number of unrelated incidents, including individual problems with toll lanes, loss of power due to routine testing, familiarisation with the new toll levels for our customers and some coins being rejected by our automated coin machines. “We are working to resolve all these issues and would expect to improve the service for tunnel users as soon as possible. In the meantime we apologise to our customers and will do all we can to ensure their journeys are not affected.” missing from birkenhead 16 year old Serge Maudsley.... if seen please call merseyside police.4/11/2013 Wirral newsbeat has secured an exclusive interview with the leader of wirral borough council. we will be meeting and interviewing cllr phil davies on Wednesday morning and we want you to get involved... send us your questions that you would like answering and we will pick the best 10 out and ask them along with the questions we have planned..
